Students benefit from handson learning from "summary" of DEMOCRACY & EDUCATION by John Dewey
The idea that students benefit from hands-on learning is central to the philosophy of education proposed by John Dewey. Dewey believed that education should be a process of growth and development, rather than simply a transfer of knowledge from teacher to student. In order for students to truly understand and internalize new information, they must be actively engaged in the learning process. Hands-on learning allows students to interact with their environment in a meaningful way, using all of their senses to explore and discover new concepts. This type of experiential learning is more engaging and memorable than traditional methods of instruction, such as lectures or rote memorization. By actively participating in the learning process, students are able to make connections between theory and practice, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Dewey believed that hands-on learning is essential for the development of critical thinking skills. When students are actively engaged in the learning process, they are forced to think critically about the information they are receiving, and to question and analyze it in order to make sense of it. This type of active engagement fosters a deeper understanding of the material, and encourages students to think creatively and independently. Furthermore, Dewey argued that hands-on learning promotes a sense of agency and empowerment in students. When students are actively involved in their own learning, they feel a sense of ownership over their education, and are more motivated to succeed. By taking an active role in the learning process, students become more self-directed and self-motivated, and are better able to take control of their own learning.- Hands-on learning is a powerful educational tool that can help students to develop critical thinking skills, make meaningful connections between theory and practice, and take ownership of their own learning. By actively engaging with their environment and exploring new concepts through hands-on experiences, students are able to deepen their understanding of the material and apply their knowledge in creative and meaningful ways.
