The pursuit of endless growth is unsustainable from "summary" of Deep Economy by Bill McKibben

Our current economic system is built on the premise that endless growth is not only possible but necessary. We are constantly bombarded with messages that more is better - more money, more stuff, more success. However, this pursuit of endless growth is simply not sustainable in the long run. As our economy continues to expand, it is doing so at the expense of the environment. We are consuming resources at an alarming rate, depleting the earth of its natural wealth. This is simply not a viable long-term strategy. We cannot continue to exploit the planet without consequences. Furthermore, this relentless pursuit of growth is also contributing to social inequality. As the rich get richer, the poor are left behind, widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots. This disparity is not only unjust but also destabilizing for society as a whole. In addition, our obsession with growth is leading to a loss of community and connection. As we focus more on material wealth, we are neglecting the things that truly matter - relationships, well-being, and happiness. This is leading to a society that is increasingly isolated and unhappy. It is clear that the current economic paradigm is not serving us well. We need to reevaluate our priorities and consider alternative models that prioritize sustainability, equity, and well-being. Only by shifting our focus away from endless growth can we hope to create a more just and sustainable future for all.
