Hierarchies are not always as rigid as they appear from "summary" of David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell
Hierarchies have a way of shaping our understanding of the world, creating a sense of order and predictability. We tend to believe that those at the top are always in control, while those at the bottom are at a disadvantage. However, the truth is often more complex than that. Throughout history, we have seen countless examples of individuals and groups challenging the established hierarchies and succeeding against all odds. One such example is the story of the Impressionist painters in France during the 19th century. At that time, the official art establishment in Paris had a strict set of rules and criteria for what constituted "good" art. Artists who did not conform to these standards were often dismissed and marginalized. However, a group of young painters, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, decided to challenge the status quo by creating art that was bold, unconventional, and revolutionary. Despite facing harsh criticism and rejection from the art establishment, the Impressionists persevered and eventually achieved great success. Their paintings, which were initially ridiculed for their unconventional style and technique, went on to become some of the most celebrated works of art in history. This example shows us that hierarchies are not always as rigid as they appear. By questioning and challenging the norms, individuals and groups can create new possibilities and redefine the rules of the game. Another example that illustrates this concept is the story of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement in the United States. During the 1960s, the racial hierarchy in America was deeply entrenched, with African Americans facing systemic discrimination and oppression. However, King and his followers refused to accept this unjust status quo and instead fought for equality and justice through nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. Despite facing violent backlash and opposition from the authorities, the civil rights movement eventually succeeded in bringing about significant social and political change. Through their courage, determination, and strategic tactics, King and his followers were able to challenge and dismantle the racial hierarchy in America, paving the way for greater equality and justice for all.- Challenged, and ultimately changed. By defying expectations and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, individuals and groups have the power to shape their own destinies and create a more just and equitable society. The key lies in having the courage to challenge the status quo and the resilience to persevere in the face of adversity. In doing so, we
