Wide area networks (WANs) connect devices across long distances from "summary" of Data Communications and Networking by Behrouz A. Forouzan
Wide area networks (WANs) are a type of network that connects devices across long distances. Unlike local area networks (LANs) which are confined to a small geographical area such as a single building or campus, WANs cover a much larger area. WANs are used to connect devices that are located far apart, such as different offices of a company in different cities or countries. WANs make it possible for users in one location to communicate with users in another location as if they were all in the same place. This is achieved through the use of various communication technologies such as telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and satellites. These technologies allow data to be transmitted over long distances quickly and efficiently, enabling users to access resources and communicate with each other no matter where they are located. One of the key characteristics of WANs is their ability to connect devices that are located in different geographic locations. This is in contrast to LANs which are typically limited to a single building or campus. By connecting devices across long distances, WANs enable users to access resources and communicate with each other regardless of their physical location. In addition to connecting devices across long distances, WANs also provide a high level of reliability and fault tolerance. This is achieved through the use of redundant connections and routing protocols that ensure data is always delivered to its intended destination. In the event of a failure in one part of the network, data can be rerouted through alternate paths to ensure uninterrupted communication.- WANs play a crucial role in enabling communication and collaboration between users located in different geographic locations. By connecting devices across long distances, WANs make it possible for users to access resources and communicate with each other no matter where they are located.
