When we keep our struggles hidden and pretend like everything is fine, shame begins to grow and fester in the darkness. It feeds off of our silence and isolation, whispering lies about our worth and value. Shame convinces us that we are alone in our struggles, that no one else could possibly understand or accept us if they knew the truth. And so we continue to hide, to wear masks and put up walls, all in an effort to protect ourselves from the judgment and rejection we fear. But the truth is, shame cannot survive in the light. When we have the courage to share our stories, to be vulnerable and authentic with others, shame loses its power over us.
