Discipline helps children develop selfcontrol from "summary" of Dare To Discipline by James Dr Dobson

I believe that one of the most important benefits of discipline is that it helps children develop self-control. When a child is disciplined in a consistent and loving manner, he learns to control his impulses and emotions. This self-control is a crucial skill that will serve him well throughout his life. Without it, he may struggle in school, relationships, and even in his future career. Imagine a child who has never been disciplined and allowed to do whatever he pleases. This child may grow up believing that he can always get his way, regardless of the consequences. He may have difficulty following rules and may struggle to get along with others. On the other hand, a child who has been disciplined from a young age will understand the importance of self-control and will be better equipped to handle life's challenges. When we discipline our children, we are teaching them valuable lessons about responsibility and consequences. By setting limits and enforcing rules, we are helping them understand that their actions have repercussions. This understanding is essential for developing self-control because it helps children learn to think before they act. Discipline also teaches children about respect and authority. When a child learns to obey his parents, he is learning to respect their authority. This respect will extend to other authority figures in his life, such as teachers, coaches, and eventually employers. By teaching children to respect authority, we are helping them develop self-control because they will be more likely to follow rules and regulations.
  1. Discipline is a powerful tool for helping children develop self-control. By teaching them responsibility, consequences, respect, and authority, we are setting them up for success in all areas of life. It may not always be easy to discipline our children, but the long-term benefits far outweigh any temporary discomfort.
