Victims deserve justice and closure from "summary" of Crime Without Punishment by John L. McClellan
The idea that victims should receive justice and closure is a fundamental principle in our legal system. When someone has been wronged, whether through violence, theft, or some other crime, it is only fair that they should see the perpetrator held accountable for their actions. This is not just about punishing the guilty party - it is also about bringing a sense of resolution to the victim. Knowing that the person who caused them harm has been brought to justice can provide a sense of closure that is essential for moving on from the trauma of the crime. In my book "Crime Without Punishment," I explore the ways in which our current justice system often fails to provide this closure for victims. Too often, cases are mishandled or overlooked, leaving victims feeling as though their suffering has been ignored or dismissed. This can have lasting consequences, both for the individual victim and for society as a whole. When people feel that the legal system does not have their best interests at heart, they may lose faith in the rule of law and become disillusioned with the idea of justice. By highlighting these shortcomings in our justice system, I hope to draw attention to the importance of prioritizing the needs of victims. It is not enough to simply punish criminals - we must also ensure that victims are given the support and closure they need to heal from their experiences. This can involve providing access to counseling services, keeping victims informed about the progress of their cases, and ultimately holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.- The concept of justice and closure for victims is about recognizing the humanity of those who have been harmed. It is about acknowledging the pain and suffering that they have endured, and working to address that in a way that is fair and just. Only by centering the needs of victims in our justice system can we hope to create a society in which everyone feels safe, secure, and respected.
