Creative ideas often come from a place of relaxed attention from "summary" of Creativity by John Cleese

The process of generating creative ideas is often misunderstood. Many people believe that creativity is about constantly pushing and striving, working harder and harder to come up with something truly original and innovative. However, this approach is not only exhausting but also counterproductive. In my experience, creative ideas tend to emerge when we are in a state of relaxed attention. This means being able to let go of the need to constantly force our brains to perform and instead allowing our minds to wander freely. When we are in a relaxed state, our brains are able to make connections between seemingly unrelated concepts, leading to new and innovative ideas. This concept of relaxed attention is crucial for fostering creativity because it allows our subconscious minds to take over and work in the background, making connections and associations that our conscious minds may not be able to grasp. When we are too focused and fixated on finding a solution, we limit our ability to think outside the box and come up with truly original ideas. By allowing ourselves to relax and let go of the pressure to constantly be productive, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and perspectives. This state of mind is often referred to as a "flow state," where we are fully immersed in the task at hand without any sense of time or effort. It is in this state of flow that some of our best and most creative ideas are born. In order to cultivate this relaxed state of attention, it is important to engage in activities that allow our minds to wander and explore freely. This could be anything from going for a walk in nature, meditating, or simply taking a break from our work to daydream. By giving ourselves the space to relax and let our minds wander, we are setting the stage for creative ideas to emerge naturally.
  1. The concept that creative ideas often come from a place of relaxed attention is a key insight into the creative process. By allowing ourselves to let go of the need to constantly strive for perfection and instead embracing a state of relaxed attention, we can tap into our subconscious minds and unlock our true creative potential.
