The Constitution of India imposes, by Article 51-A, certain duties on every citizen. These duties are called "fundamental" because they are fundamental to the very idea of citizenship in a democratic country. They are also called "fundamental" because they are essential and basic to the well-being of the nation and the happiness of the citizen. These fundamental duties are not enforceable by law as are the rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to every citizen.
