Fundamental duties are essential for citizens from "summary" of Constitution of India by Fali S. Nariman
The Constitution of India imposes, by Article 51-A, certain duties on every citizen. These duties are called "fundamental" because they are fundamental to the very idea of citizenship in a democratic country. They are also called "fundamental" because they are essential and basic to the well-being of the nation and the happiness of the citizen. These fundamental duties are not enforceable by law as are the rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to every citizen. But they are duties nonetheless, and it is hoped that every citizen will strive to fulfil them. The concept of fundamental duties was not present in the original Constitution of India. It was inserted by the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution in 1976. The idea behind these fundamental duties is to remind every citizen that while they have certain rights and freedoms, they also have certain duties towards the nation and their fellow citizens. These duties include respect for the national flag and anthem, safeguarding public property, and striving towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity. The fundamental duties also include promoting harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India. This is important in a country as diverse as India, with its many languages, religions, and cultures. By promoting harmony and brotherhood, citizens can contribute towards the unity and integrity of the nation. Other duties include protecting and improving the natural environment, and developing a scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform.- It is meant to be a guiding principle for citizens to follow in their daily lives. By fulfilling these duties, citizens can contribute towards the overall well-being of the nation and make India a better place for future generations. In this way, fundamental duties are essential for citizens to uphold the values of democracy, equality, and justice in the country.
