Switches manage data within a network from "summary" of Computer Networking Beginners Guide by Russell Scott

Switches play a crucial role in managing data within a network. When devices are connected to a network, they need a way to communicate with each other. This is where switches come in. Switches act as intermediaries, directing data traffic between devices on the network. Unlike hubs, which simply broadcast data to all connected devices, switches are smarter and more efficient. They analyze data packets and send them only to the intended recipient, reducing unnecessary network traffic and improving overall performance. This process is known as packet switching. By creating a direct connection between the sender and receiver, switches enable faster and more reliable communication. This direct connection also enhances security by minimizing the risk of data interception. Switches operate at the data link layer of the OSI model, where they use MAC addresses to identify devices on the network. When a device wants to send data to another device, the switch looks up the destination MAC address and forwards the data packet to the appropriate port. In larger networks, switches are often used in conjunction with routers to efficiently manage data traffic. Routers are responsible for directing data between different networks, while switches handle data within the network itself.
  1. Switches are essential components of modern networks, providing the necessary intelligence to ensure that data is routed efficiently and securely. Their ability to manage data traffic plays a key role in the smooth operation of network communications.
