Sexual response is not linear from "summary" of Come As You Are: Revised and Updated by Emily Nagoski

Our sexual response is not a mechanical, predictable process that moves step by step from arousal to orgasm. It is a dynamic and complex interplay of various factors that can vary greatly from person to person and even within the same person at different times. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for how sexual desire, arousal, and satisfaction should unfold. Many people have been taught to believe that sexual response follows a linear path, where desire leads to arousal which leads to orgasm. However, this oversimplified model ignores the reality that our sexual experiences are influenced by a multitude of factors such as emotions, stress, past experiences, and physical sensations. These factors can interact in unique ways, creating a rich tapestry of responses that do not always conform to a linear progression. Our sexual response is more accurately described as a non-linear process that ebbs and flows, changes direction, and can circle back on itself. Rather than moving in a straight line towards a predetermined goal, our sexual experiences are shaped by a dynamic interplay of internal and external influences that can cause us to shift gears, change course, or pause and regroup at any point along the way. Understanding that sexual response is not linear can help us let go of unrealistic expectations and embrace the unique and evolving nature of our own desires and experiences. By recognizing that our sexuality is a complex and multifaceted aspect of who we are, we can approach it with curiosity, compassion, and openness, allowing ourselves to explore and enjoy the full spectrum of pleasure and connection that it has to offer.
