The concept of the "two loves" shaping human behavior from "summary" of City of God by Saint Augustine (of Hippo)
The two loves have produced two cities. The love of self, reaching even to the contempt of God, has produced the earthly city. The love of God, reaching even to contempt of self, has produced the heavenly city. The former glories in itself; the latter in the Lord. The former seeks glory from men; but the latter finds its highest glory in God, the witness of a good conscience. The former lifts up its head in its own glory; the latter says to its God, "Thou art my glory, and the lifter up of mine head." In the one, the princes and the nations it subdues are ruled by the love of ruling; in the other, the princes and the subjects serve one another in love, the subjects obeying, while the rulers take thought for all. In the earthly city, the princes and the nations it subdues are ruled by the love of ruling; in the heavenly city, the princes and the subjects serve one another in love, the subjects obeying, while the rulers take thought for all.
