God's eternal city contrasts with the earthly city from "summary" of City of God by Saint Augustine (of Hippo)
In the divine plan of God, there exists a stark contrast between two cities: the eternal city of God and the earthly city of man. These cities are fundamentally different in their essence, purpose, and ultimate destiny. The City of God, founded on the love of God and the pursuit of divine truth, stands in sharp opposition to the earthly city, which is built on the flawed and fleeting desires of human beings.
The City of God is a heavenly city, a celestial abode where God's presence reigns supreme. It is a city of eternal peace, joy, and fulfillment, where the souls of the righteous find their true home. In contrast, the earthly city is a place of transience, characterized by sin, suffering, and impermanence. It is a city where human beings strive for power, wealth, and pleasure, only to be ultimately disappointed by the emptiness of their pursuits.
The inhabitants of the City of God are the saints and the faithful, who have dedicated their lives to the service of God and the pursuit of holiness. They are guided by the eternal truths of God's word and seek to live in harmony with His divine will. In contrast, the citizens of the earthly city are driven by selfish desires and worldly ambitions. They are consumed by their own egos and seek to elevate themselves above others, often at the expense of justice and compassion.
The City of God is a city of light, where the truth of God's love shines brightly for all to see. It is a city where virtue, humility, and selflessness are celebrated and honored. In contrast, the earthly city is a city of darkness, where the forces of evil and sin hold sway. It is a city where vice, pride, and greed are rampant, leading to discord, strife, and suffering. The City of God and the earthly city exist in tension and conflict. The earthly city, with all its flaws and deficiencies, is ultimately destined for destruction and oblivion. In contrast, the City of God, with its eternal beauty and perfection, will endure forever, a testament to the majesty and glory of God.
