Silence the mind to find inner peace from "summary" of Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen

When we sit down to meditate, we're not trying to make anything happen. We're simply sitting and paying attention to what's going on. We're not trying to make our minds blank or to rid ourselves of thoughts. We're not trying to manipulate our experience in any way. We're not trying to get something. We're simply paying attention to what's happening right now. We're simply being present. As we sit, we notice that thoughts come and go. We notice that our minds are often busy and scattered. We notice that our minds are constantly churning out thoughts, judgments, opinions, and stories. But we don't get caught up in them. We don't get carried away by them. We don't follow them down the rabbit hole. We simply notice them and let them go. Gradually, as we continue to sit and pay attention, our minds begin to quiet down. The thoughts don't stop coming, but we don't get caught up in them as much. We don't get carried away by them as much. We don't follow them down the rabbit hole as much. We begin to see that our thoughts are just mental events that come and go. They don't define who we are. They don't control us. They don't have power over us. We begin to see that we can simply let them go. As our minds quiet down, we begin to experience a sense of calm and clarity. We begin to experience a sense of spaciousness and peace. We begin to experience a sense of freedom and ease. We begin to experience a sense of inner peace. We begin to see that inner peace is not something we have to get or achieve. It's not something we have to search for or find. It's not something we have to create or manufacture. It's already here, within us, waiting to be discovered. When we silence the mind, we allow inner peace to reveal itself. We allow it to shine through. We allow it to blossom and flourish. We allow it to permeate our entire being. We allow it to become our natural state of being. We allow it to become who we truly are. We allow it to become our home.
