The Eightfold Path serves as a roadmap to enlightenment from "summary" of Buddhism for Beginners by Thubten Chodron

The Eightfold Path is a foundational teaching in Buddhism that outlines the steps one must take to reach enlightenment. It is likened to a roadmap that guides practitioners on their spiritual journey towards ultimate liberation. Just as a roadmap provides directions to travelers, the Eightfold Path offers a clear and systematic path for individuals seeking spiritual growth and awakening. Each of the eight components of the path corresponds to a specific aspect of one's thoughts, actions, and intentions. These components are not meant to be followed in isolation but rather as interconnected parts of a whole. By cultivating each aspect of the path, individuals can gradually transform their minds and hearts, leading them closer to enlightenment. The first two components of the Eightfold Path, Right View and Right Intention, serve as the foundation for the rest of the path. Right View involves understanding the true nature of reality and seeing things as they really are, free from delusion and ignorance. Right Intention refers to the commitment to cultivating wholesome qualities such as compassion, kindness, and wisdom. The next three components – Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood – focus on ethical conduct and how individuals interact with the world around them. By practicing Right Speech, one avoids harmful speech such as lying, gossiping, or harsh words. Right Action involves acting in ways that are beneficial and non-harmful to oneself and others. Right Livelihood encourages individuals to earn a living in a way that is honest and does not cause harm to others. The final three components of the Eightfold Path – Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration – pertain to mental cultivation and meditation practice. Right Effort involves making a sustained effort to cultivate positive qualities and overcome negative tendencies. Right Mindfulness is the practice of being aware and present in the moment, observing one's thoughts and feelings without judgment. Right Concentration refers to the development of focused attention and deep meditative states that lead to insight and wisdom.
