In addition to its direct effects on the gut and brain, lack of sleep can also disrupt the communication between the two. The gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system between the gut and the brain, relies on a healthy gut microbiome and proper brain function to function effectively. When we don't get enough sleep, this communication system can become dysregulated, leading to a host of physical and mental health issues.
