Regular exercise enhances cognitive abilities from "summary" of Brain Food by Lorraine Perretta,Oona van den Berg

Engaging in physical activity on a regular basis has been shown to have a positive impact on our cognitive abilities. When we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins, which are known to improve mood and reduce stress. This is important because when we are stressed or feeling down, our cognitive abilities can be impaired. By incorporating regular exercise into our routine, we can potentially enhance our cognitive function. Moreover, exercise has been found to increase blood flow to the brain, delivering much-needed oxygen and nutrients to this vital organ. This boost in blood flow can lead to improved focus, concentration, and overall brain function. In fact, studies have shown that individuals who engage in regular physical activity tend to have better memory and cognitive skills compared to those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Additionally, regular exercise can promote the growth of new brain cells in a process known as neurogenesis. This is particularly important for maintaining cognitive function as we age. As we grow older, our brain naturally undergoes changes that can impact our memory and cognitive abilities. By engaging in regular physical activity, we can potentially slow down or even reverse some of these age-related changes, thereby preserving our cognitive abilities. Furthermore, exercise has been linked to the production of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays a key role in promoting the growth and maintenance of nerve cells. By increasing levels of BDNF through regular exercise, we can support the health and function of our brain cells, leading to improved cognitive abilities.
