Chronic inflammation can negatively affect brain energy from "summary" of Brain Energy by Christopher M. Palmer, MD

Chronic inflammation is a common problem that can have detrimental effects on brain energy. When the body is in a state of chronic inflammation, it is constantly fighting off perceived threats, leading to increased energy expenditure. This can result in a depletion of energy resources that would otherwise be used by the brain for important functions. Inflammation triggers the release of pro-inflammatory molecules that can disrupt the normal functioning of the brain. These molecules can interfere with the production and utilization of energy in the brain, leading to decreased efficiency in brain processes. As a result, individuals may experience symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and difficulties with concentration and memory. Moreover, chronic inflammation can impair the function of mitochondria, which are responsible for generating energy in the brain. Mitochondrial dysfunction can further exacerbate energy deficits in the brain, leading to a vicious cycle of decreased energy production and increased inflammation. Inflammation can also disrupt the blood-brain barrier, a protective barrier that regulates the passage of molecules into the brain. When the blood-brain barrier is compromised, harmful substances can enter the brain and trigger a cascade of inflammatory responses that further deplete energy resources.
  1. Chronic inflammation can have profound effects on brain energy, leading to cognitive impairments and other neurological symptoms. By addressing the underlying causes of inflammation and promoting a healthy lifestyle, individuals can support optimal brain energy production and function.
