Boundaries are like property lines for your soul. They define where you end and where someone else begins. When we have clear boundaries, we are able to take ownership of our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We are responsible for how we react to others, and we cannot control how others treat us. However, we can set limits on what we will and will not tolerate.
When we have weak or nonexistent boundaries, we send a message to others that their behavior is acceptable. We become enmeshed with others, losing our sense of self in the process. This can lead to resentment, anger, and frustration as we feel powerless to protect ourselves. People will continue to push our limits and disrespect us if we do not establish boundaries.
