Growing up in apartheid South Africa, I learned early on that life was not going to be easy. My very existence was a crime in the eyes of the law, simply because of the color of my skin. But instead of succumbing to the weight of the system that sought to crush me, I chose to develop resilience and strength.
Resilience, to me, meant finding the inner strength to keep going even when the odds were stacked against me. I saw my mother as the epitome of resilience - a woman who faced unimaginable challenges every day, yet never gave up. She taught me that resilience was not just about surviving, but about thriving in the face of adversity.
Strength, on the other hand, was about standing tall in the face of danger and never backing down. It was about finding the courage to speak out against injustice and to fight for what is right, even when the consequences could be dire. My mother instilled in me the belief that true strength came from within, and that no one could take that away from me.
