Building emotional vocabulary is crucial for emotional intelligence from "summary" of Boost Emotional Intelligence in Students by Maurice J. Elias,Steven E. Tobias

Emotional vocabulary refers to the words we use to describe our feelings and emotions. A rich emotional vocabulary allows us to accurately identify and express our emotions, which is essential for developing emotional intelligence. When we have a limited emotional vocabulary, we may struggle to understand and communicate our feelings effectively. Emotional intelligence involves being aware of and managing our own emotions, as well as recognizing and empathizing with the emotions of others. By expanding our emotional vocabulary, we can become more in tune with our own emotions and better equipped to navigate social interactions. When students are able to label their emotions with specific words, they are better able to regulate their emotional responses. For example, if a student is feeling anxious but can only describe it as "feeling bad," they may not know how to address or cope with their emotions. However, if they can identify their feeling as "anxiety," they can take steps to manage it more effectively. Furthermore, having a diverse emotional vocabulary enables students to communicate their feelings to others, which is crucial for building healthy relationships. When students can articulate how they are feeling, they are more likely to receive the support and understanding they need from their peers and teachers. In order to help students develop their emotional vocabulary, educators can provide opportunities for them to explore and practice using different emotion words. Activities such as journaling, role-playing, and discussing emotions in group settings can enhance students' emotional literacy. By incorporating emotional vocabulary into the curriculum, educators can empower students to express themselves more clearly and confidently.
