Iraqi forces regained control of Mosul from "summary" of Black Flags by Joby Warrick
In June 2014, the Iraqi city of Mosul fell to the Islamic State, sending shockwaves around the world. The terrorists paraded through the streets, their black flags fluttering in the wind, as they declared the establishment of a new caliphate. The loss of Mosul dealt a devastating blow to the Iraqi government, exposing the weaknesses of its military and sending a message of fear and terror to the people of Iraq and beyond. For the next three years, Mosul remained under the brutal rule of the Islamic State. The city became a symbol of the group's power and cruelty, as they carried out mass executions, imposed strict laws, and destroyed cultural heritage sites. The people of Mosul lived in fear, trapped between the violence of the militants and the airstrikes of the international coalition. But in October 2016, a glimmer of hope appeared on the horizon. Iraqi forces, backed by Kurdish fighters and supported by the United States, launched a massive offensive to retake Mosul. The battle was fierce and bloody, as the militants fought fiercely to hold on to their last stronghold in Iraq. Despite the challenges and the heavy toll on both sides, the Iraqi forces gradually gained ground, pushing the Islamic State fighters back and reclaiming neighborhoods one by one. The battle for Mosul was a brutal urban warfare, with civilians caught in the crossfire and suffering unimaginable hardships. But the determination and resilience of the Iraqi forces, along with the support of the international coalition, eventually paid off. On July 10, 2017, after nine months of intense fighting, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in Mosul. The black flags of the Islamic State were torn down, replaced by the Iraqi national flag. The people of Mosul poured out into the streets, celebrating their newfound freedom and the defeat of the terrorists who had held them captive for so long. The battle for Mosul was a turning point in the fight against the Islamic State, a symbol of the resilience and determination of the Iraqi people in the face of adversity.Similar Posts
