The legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of black people today from "summary" of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

The Dream thrives on generalization, on limiting the number of possible questions, on privileging immediate answers. The Dream is the enemy of all art, courageous thinking, and honest writing. And it is the only thing that racism has ever truly feared. The Dream is the need to be white, to be a part of the people who believe themselves to be white. The Dream is about the need to be brought into the fold of America, to be one of the "men" who are free. The Dream is the need to be a part of the great, ongoing, the historic inclusion. The Dream rests on the belief that they are white, that we are not, that I am white, that we are not. The Dream thrives on the erasure of history, on the denial of the racist practices that built this country, and on the insistence that those practices no longer affect our lives today. But the Dream is a lie, a delusion that only serves to perpetuate the suffering of black people in America. The Dream ignores the fact that slavery and segregation have left deep scars on the black community, scars that continue to shape our experiences and limit our opportunities. The Dream tells us that we are all equal now, that we live in a post-racial society where everyone has an equal chance at success. But the reality is far different. The legacy of slavery continues to haunt us, to limit our possibilities, to shape our reality. The Dream tells us that we can overcome the past, that we can achieve success through hard work and determination. But the reality is that the system is rigged against us, that our blackness is seen as a threat, as a sign of inferiority. The Dream tells us that if we just work hard enough, if we just follow the rules, we can achieve the same success as white people. But the reality is that the rules were never meant to apply to us, that the game was never meant to be fair. The Dream tells us that we are to blame for our own struggles, that if we just behaved better, if we just pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps, we could overcome the obstacles that stand in our way. But the reality is that those obstacles were put there by design, that they are the result of centuries of oppression and exploitation. The Dream tells us that we are free, that we are equal, that we are included. But the reality is that we are still fighting for our humanity
