Black bodies are often seen as targets for violence from "summary" of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
The black body is always at risk. There is a belief in this country that your black body is disposable. It is a belief that has been passed down through generations, a belief that has been ingrained in the very foundation of America. The black body is seen as a threat, as something to be feared and controlled. It is a target for violence, a target for oppression, a target for dehumanization. When you are black in America, your body is not your own. It is something to be policed, to be regulated, to be punished. Your body is seen as dangerous, as criminal, as inferior. Your body is not seen as a person, but as a problem to be solved. This devaluation of the black body is systemic, it is institutionalized, it is woven into the fabric of American society. The black body is constantly under surveillance. It is scrutinized, it is judged, it is monitored. Every movement, every gesture, every word is seen as a potential threat. The black body is seen as a target for violence because it is seen as a threat to the status quo, a threat to the existing power structures. The black body is seen as a target because it challenges the narrative of white supremacy, because it refuses to be silent, because it refuses to be invisible. The black body is not safe in this country. It is not protected, it is not valued, it is not respected. The black body is vulnerable, it is exposed, it is at risk. The black body is often seen as a target for violence because it is seen as something to be controlled, as something to be feared, as something to be destroyed. This is the reality of being black in America. This is the reality of living in a society that sees your body as a threat, as a problem, as a target for violence.Similar Posts
