We must confront the anguish of our own existence from "summary" of Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre

In our daily lives, we often seek to distract ourselves from the deep sense of unease that accompanies our existence. We fill our days with activities, immerse ourselves in work, or lose ourselves in relationships in an attempt to avoid facing the fundamental questions about our own being. However, no matter how much we try to escape, the anguish of our existence continues to linger beneath the surface, waiting to be acknowledged. Confronting the anguish of our own existence requires us to come face to face with the stark reality of our own mortality. We must grapple with the fact that we are finite beings, destined to die one day. This awareness can be deeply unsettling, as it forces us to confront the impermanence of our lives and the ultimate meaninglessness of our existence. Moreover, in acknowledging our own existence, we also come to realize that we are ultimately responsible for our choices and actions. Our freedom to choose comes with the burden of responsibility, as every decision we make has consequences that shape our lives and the world around us. This recognition can be overwhelming, as it requires us to take ownership of our own existence and accept the weight of our own agency. However, it is only through confronting the anguish of our own existence that we can truly embrace our freedom and authenticity. By acknowledging the inherent uncertainties and anxieties that come with being human, we can begin to live more genuinely and meaningfully. Instead of running away from our existential angst, we can choose to confront it head-on and use it as a source of motivation to live more authentically and passionately. In the face of the existential void, we have the power to create our own meaning and purpose in life. By embracing our freedom and taking responsibility for our choices, we can transcend the limitations of our existence and carve out our own path in the world. It is only by confronting the anguish of our own existence that we can truly live fully and authentically, embracing the uncertainties and complexities of being human.
