The Other is both a menace and a source of meaning from "summary" of Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre

In our existence, we are constantly confronted by the presence of others. These others serve as a threat to our freedom and autonomy, as they have the power to define us through their gaze and judgments. Their very existence challenges our sense of self, forcing us to confront our own limitations and insecurities. This experience of being objectified by others is both terrifying and disorienting, as it undermines our sense of individuality and uniqueness. However, despite the anxiety and fear that the Other can provoke in us, they also play a crucial role in our search for meaning and identity. The presence of others serves as a mirror in which we can see ourselves reflected, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of who we are and what we value. Through our interactions with others, we are able to define ourselves in relation to them, shaping our sense of self through the social roles and relationships that we inhabit. Furthermore, the Other can also act as a source of validation and affirmation, providing us with a sense of belonging and connection to the world around us. By engaging with others and seeking their approval, we are able to create a sense of community and shared values that give our lives purpose and significance. In this way, the Other can be both a source of meaning and fulfillment in our lives.
  1. The presence of others forces us to confront our own existence and the ways in which we relate to the world around us. While they may pose a threat to our sense of self, they also offer us the opportunity to discover ourselves and find meaning in our relationships with others. It is through this complex interplay between self and Other that we are able to navigate the challenges of existence and create a sense of purpose and identity in our lives.
