Inauthenticity is a refusal to accept responsibility from "summary" of Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre
Inauthenticity, as Sartre defines it, is a fundamental denial of one's own freedom and responsibility. It is a refusal to acknowledge the fact that we are the architects of our own existence, responsible for our choices and their consequences. When we choose to live inauthentically, we are choosing to relinquish our power and agency, to deny our ability to shape our own destiny. By refusing to accept responsibility for our actions, we are essentially choosing to live in a state of self-deception. Inauthenticity is a form of bad faith, a way of lying to ourselves about who we are and what we are capable of. It is a way of avoiding the anxiety and uncertainty that comes with acknowledging our own freedom and autonomy. Sartre argues that inauthenticity is a form of self-betrayal, a betrayal of our own potential and possibilities. When we refuse to accept responsibility for our choices, we are denying ourselves the opportunity to truly be ourselves, to live authentically and in accordance with our own values and beliefs.- Inauthenticity is a way of avoiding the discomfort and challenge of facing up to the demands of our own existence. It is a way of hiding from the truth of our own freedom and agency, of choosing to live in ignorance rather than confront the reality of our own power to shape our lives. In choosing inauthenticity, we are choosing to live a lie, to deny ourselves the opportunity to be truly free.
