Defensive play in hockey requires a great deal of physical exertion from players. This aspect of the game is often overlooked, but those who have played defense know how demanding it can be. To be an effective defender, one must constantly be moving, skating back and forth across the ice, anticipating the movements of the opposing team and reacting quickly to intercept passes and break up plays. The physical demands of defensive play are not limited to just skating. Defenders must also be prepared to engage in physical battles along the boards and in front of the net.
