The legal system is skewed in favor of the wealthy from "summary" of Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

The legal system in Annawadi, like in many places, had a way of favoring the wealthy. For the poor residents of the slum, justice was often out of reach. When conflicts arose, those with money and influence could easily manipulate the system in their favor. The poor, on the other hand, found themselves at a distinct disadvantage. One such example is the case of Abdul, a young garbage sorter who was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit. Despite having evidence in his favor, Abdul faced an uphill battle in proving his innocence. The legal process was slow and expensive, and he lacked the resources to navigate it effectively. Meanwhile, his wealthy accuser had the means to hire high-powered lawyers and bribe officials to ensure a favorable outcome. In Annawadi, money often determined who received justice and who did not. Those with means could buy their way out of trouble, while the poor were left to fend for themselves. This created a system where the wealthy could act with impunity, knowing that they could escape consequences through their connections and resources. The imbalance of power was stark, leaving the marginalized residents of the slum feeling powerless and disenfranchised. The legal system's bias towards the wealthy perpetuated a cycle of injustice in Annawadi. The poor were consistently denied their rights and left vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Without access to fair and impartial justice, they had little hope of improving their circumstances or holding those in power accountable. The system was designed to protect the interests of the privileged few, while the poor were left to fend for themselves in a world where money spoke louder than truth or justice.
