Social status determines one's life trajectory from "summary" of Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

In Annawadi, a slum near the Mumbai airport, social status holds the power to shape destinies. For those residing in the slum, where sewage and disease are rampant, where corruption and exploitation run rampant, social status is the determining factor in the trajectory of their lives.
