Mentorship, I've come to believe, is a two-way street. Even when the relationship seems one-sided, it's always a reciprocal one. We're both learning something from it. When you're the person in the position of power, you need to ask yourself, "Who am I lifting up? What opportunities am I creating for people?" And when you're the one receiving mentorship, you have to consider, "What am I learning here? How am I growing?" It's an exchange, a dialogue, and it can't be a passive one. I've been lucky to have some incredible mentors in my own life. People who saw something in me that I may not have seen in myself. People who encouraged me, pushed me, and believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. These relationships have been invaluable to me, shaping me into the person I am today.
