The mind must be stilled to reveal the inner essence from "summary" of Be As You Are by Sri Ramana Maharshi
The mind, with its constant chatter and restless movements, obscures our true nature. It is like a veil that covers the essence of who we really are. In order to uncover this inner essence, we must learn to still the mind, to quieten its incessant noise and activity. This is not an easy task, for the mind is a powerful and persistent force. It will resist our attempts to tame it, throwing up all sorts of distractions and obstacles to keep us from reaching the stillness within. But if we persevere, if we continue to practice the art of quieting the mind, we will eventually break through the barriers that it has erected. We will come to see that the mind is not who we are, that it is merely a tool that we can use to navigate the world. And as we go deeper into this stillness, we will begin to catch glimpses of our true essence, our innermost being that is beyond the mind. In this state of inner quiet, we will find a deep sense of peace and contentment that is not dependent on external circumstances. We will discover a wellspring of joy and love that flows from within, radiating outwards to touch all that we encounter. And we will realize that this essence, this core of our being, is connected to the universal consciousness that underlies all of existence. It is in this stillness that we come to know ourselves as we truly are, beyond the limitations of the mind and the ego. We tap into a source of wisdom and insight that guides us in our journey through life. And we find a sense of unity with all of creation, recognizing that we are not separate from the world around us, but intimately connected to it in ways that we may never fully understand.- To still its restless movements and listen to the silence that lies beneath. Let us open ourselves up to the inner essence that waits to be revealed, to the truth of who we are beyond all thoughts and emotions. And let us embrace this stillness as a gateway to our deepest self, a path to the realization of our true nature.
