Nerve supply of lower limbs from "summary" of Bd Chaurasia's Human Anatomy, Volume 1 by B. D. Chaurasia

The nerves that supply the lower limbs are essential for movement and sensation in this region of the body. These nerves originate from the lumbar and sacral plexuses, which are networks of nerves formed by the ventral rami of spinal nerves. The lumbar plexus gives rise to nerves such as the femoral nerve, which innervates the anterior thigh muscles and skin, as well as the obturator nerve, which supplies the adductor muscles of the thigh. On the other hand, the sacral plexus is responsible for providing innervation to the posterior thigh and the entire lower leg and foot. The sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, arises from the sacral plexus and provides motor and sensory functions to the muscles and skin of the posterior thigh, leg, and foot. The tibial nerve, a branch of the sciatic nerve, innervates the muscles of the posterior leg and provides sensation to the sole of the foot. In addition to the femoral, obturator, sciatic, and tibial nerves, there are other nerves that contribute to the nerve supply of the lower limbs. The common fibular nerve, another branch of the sciatic nerve, innervates the muscles of the anterior and lateral leg and provides sensation to the dorsum of the foot. The superficial fibular nerve and deep fibular nerve are branches of the common fibular nerve that further divide to supply specific muscles and areas of the foot.
  1. The nerve supply of the lower limbs is a complex network of nerves that work together to ensure proper movement and sensation in this region of the body. Understanding the anatomy and function of these nerves is crucial for diagnosing and treating conditions that may affect the lower limbs.
