Nerve supply of head and neck from "summary" of Bd Chaurasia's Human Anatomy, Volume 1 by B. D. Chaurasia
The nerves supplying the head and neck are derived from the cranial and cervical nerves. The cranial nerves arise from the brain and provide motor and sensory innervation to the structures of the head and neck. The cervical nerves originate from the spinal cord in the neck region and also contribute to the nerve supply of the head and neck. The cranial nerves that play a significant role in the nerve supply of the head and neck include the trigeminal nerve (CN V), facial nerve (CN VII), glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), vagus nerve (CN X), and the accessory nerve (CN XI). These cranial nerves innervate various structures such as the muscles of mastication, facial expression, throat, and larynx, as well as provide sensation to the face, mouth, and throat. The trigeminal nerve, the largest of the cranial nerves, is responsible for the sensory innervation of the face and motor innervation of the muscles of mastication. The facial nerve controls the muscles of facial expression, while the glossopharyngeal nerve and vagus nerve innervate the throat and larynx. The accessory nerve primarily supplies motor innervation to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. In addition to the cranial nerves, the cervical nerves also contribute to the nerve supply of the head and neck. These nerves emerge from the spinal cord and provide sensory and motor innervation to the neck muscles, skin, and joints. The cervical nerves also give rise to branches that innervate structures such as the scalp, ear, and shoulder region.- The nerve supply of the head and neck is a complex network of cranial and cervical nerves that work together to provide motor and sensory innervation to the various structures of this region. Understanding the nerve supply of the head and neck is crucial for diagnosing and treating various neurological and musculoskeletal conditions that may affect these areas.
