Nerve supply of abdomen from "summary" of Bd Chaurasia's Human Anatomy, Volume 1 by B. D. Chaurasia

The abdomen is innervated by a complex network of nerves that supply the muscles, skin, and viscera of this region. The nerves responsible for providing sensory and motor innervation to the abdomen originate from the spinal cord and pass through various structures before reaching their target organs. The main nerves that supply the abdomen include the intercostal nerves, subcostal nerve, ilioinguinal nerve, iliohypogastric nerve, and the branches of the lumbar plexus. The intercostal nerves arise from the thoracic spinal cord and run between the ribs to innervate the muscles and skin of the anterior and lateral abdominal wall. The subcostal nerve is a continuation of the 12th intercostal nerve and provides sensory innervation to the skin of the lower abdomen. The ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerves are branches of the first lumbar nerve and provide sensory innervation to the skin of the inguinal region and the hypogastric region, respectively. These nerves also supply the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall. The branches of the lumbar plexus, including the iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, and genitofemoral nerves, also contribute to the nerve supply of the abdomen. In addition to providing sensory innervation, these nerves also supply motor fibers to the muscles of the abdominal wall, allowing for movements such as flexion, rotation, and lateral bending. Damage to any of these nerves can result in sensory deficits, muscle weakness, and impaired function of the abdominal organs.
  1. The nerve supply of the abdomen is a vital component of the body's nervous system, ensuring proper sensory perception and motor function in this region. Understanding the anatomy and function of these nerves is essential for diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the abdomen.
