In the midst of my suffering, I began to see the true nature of humanity. The cruelty and indifference that surrounded me day in and day out filled me with despair. I saw how easily people could turn a blind eye to the suffering of others, how they could justify the most heinous acts in the name of profit or convenience. It was as if a veil had been lifted from my eyes, revealing the ugliness that lay beneath the surface of society. I had once believed in the inherent goodness of people, in their capacity for compassion and empathy. But as I witnessed the horrors of slavery, as I endured the dehumanizing treatment at the hands of my oppressors, that belief began to crumble.
