In essence, the idea of building habits that lead to a fulfilling life is not about making massive changes or achieving overnight success. The key is to focus on the process rather than the outcome, to make small changes that are sustainable and easy to maintain. One of the fundamental principles of habit formation is the concept of identity-based habits. Instead of focusing on what you want to achieve (outcome-based habits), you should focus on who you want to become. By changing your identity and seeing yourself as the type of person who engages in certain habits, you are more likely to stick to those habits in the long term. For example, instead of trying to lose weight (outcome-based), focus on becoming a healthy person who eats well and exercises regularly (identity-based). Another crucial aspect of building habits that lead to a fulfilling life is the concept of habit stacking. This involves linking a new habit to an existing habit that you already do consistently. By piggybacking on an established routine, you are more likely to remember to do the new habit and make it a part of your daily life. For example, if you want to start meditating every day, you can stack it onto your morning coffee routine by meditating for a few minutes right after you finish your coffee. Furthermore, it is essential to make your habits obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying. By making your desired habits more visible, appealing, simple, and rewarding, you are more likely to stick to them over time. This can be achieved by creating a specific plan for when and where you will perform the habit, making it attractive by linking it to a positive emotion or rewarding yourself after completing the habit, making it easy by reducing friction and barriers, and making it satisfying by celebrating small wins and tracking your progress.
