Selfdiscipline and self-control are essential for achieving our goals from "summary" of Aristotle's Way by Edith Hall

Self-discipline and self-control are two of the most important virtues that Aristotle believed were necessary for achieving our goals. According to him, self-discipline is the ability to set aside immediate gratification in order to achieve long-term success. In other words, it requires us to resist the temptation to give in to our desires and instead focus on what needs to be done in order to reach our objectives. Self-control, on the other hand, is the ability to regulate our emotions and impulses in order to stay on track towards our goals. It involves being mindful of our actions and making conscious choices that align with our values and aspirations. Without self-control, we are more likely to be swayed by our emotions and external influences, which can lead us astray from our intended path. Together, self-discipline and self-control form the foundation of Aristotle's ethical philosophy. He believed that by cultivating these virtues, we are better equipped to make rational decisions that are in line with our ultimate goals and values. This requires a certain level of self-awareness and introspection, as well as a willingness to challenge ourselves and push beyond our comfort zones. By exercising self-discipline and self-control, we are able to overcome obstacles and setbacks that may arise on our journey towards success. It allows us to stay focused and motivated, even when faced with challenges and distractions. Ultimately, it is through the practice of these virtues that we are able to achieve our goals and fulfill our potential.
  1. Self-discipline and self-control are not just valuable traits to possess, but essential qualities that can propel us towards success. By mastering these virtues, we are able to navigate the complexities of life with clarity and purpose, ultimately leading us to the fulfillment of our goals and aspirations.
