Huck's struggle with his conscience from "summary" of Annotated Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain,Michael Patrick Hearn

Throughout the novel, Huck consistently finds himself torn between his own morals and the expectations of society. Raised in a world that upholds slavery and racism, Huck is taught to believe that these are acceptable practices. However, as he spends more time with Jim, a runaway slave, Huck begins to question the values he has been taught. As Huck grapples with his conscience, he is faced with difficult decisions that challenge his understanding of right and wrong. Despite knowing that helping Jim escape is considered wrong by society, Huck cannot bring himself to turn Jim in. This internal conflict highlights Huck's struggle to reconcile his own beliefs with the beliefs of those around him. Huck's journey down the Mississippi River serves as a metaphor for his journey towards self-discovery. As he navigates the challenges of adolescence and societal expectations, Huck learns to trust his instincts and follow his own moral compass. Through his interactions with Jim and other characters, Huck begins to understand the complexities of human nature and the limitations of societal norms.
  1. Huck ultimately chooses to act according to his own beliefs. This defiance of societal expectations demonstrates Huck's growth and development throughout the novel. By the end of his journey, Huck emerges as a more independent and self-aware individual, capable of making his own decisions based on his conscience rather than the expectations of others.
