When we consider the principle of equality, we must not limit it to only certain groups based on arbitrary characteristics such as race or gender. To be consistent in our application of this principle, we must also extend it to all beings who have the capacity to suffer. This includes non-human animals who are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain and pleasure. Speciesism, the belief that one species is superior to others simply based on species membership, is a form of discrimination that is no more justifiable than racism or sexism. Just as we would find it unacceptable to treat someone as inferior because of their race or gender, we should also find it unacceptable to treat animals as inferior simply because they belong to a different species.
