The struggle for truth is a central theme in both Animal Farm and 1984. In Animal Farm, the animals are oppressed by the humans and strive to create a society where all animals are equal. However, as time passes, the pigs begin to manipulate the truth to maintain their power. They change the commandments to suit their needs and rewrite history to erase their own mistakes. Similarly, in 1984, the Party controls all information and uses it to manipulate the truth. They alter historical records to show that they have always been in power and that their enemies are the ones responsible for all the suffering in society.
