Doublethink and Newspeak from "summary" of Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell
Doublethink is the ability to hold two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously and accept both of them. It is a concept that lies at the heart of the Party's control over its citizens in the dystopian society of Oceania. The Party demands not just obedience, but complete submission of thought and will. By engaging in doublethink, individuals are able to accept whatever the Party tells them, even if it directly contradicts what they may have believed or experienced in the past. Newspeak is the language created by the Party to further enforce its control over the people. It is a language designed to limit freedom of thought and expression by systematically removing words from the language that could be used to express dissent or independent thinking. The ultimate goal of Newspeak is to make it impossible to even conceive of rebellious thoughts, as the words to express them simply do not exist.
