Control of language from "summary" of Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell
Language is a powerful tool, a tool that can be twisted and manipulated to serve the interests of those in power. In the world of Animal Farm, language is used by the pigs to control the other animals, to shape their beliefs and perceptions. The pigs, led by Napoleon, understand the power of words, of being able to redefine reality through language. By constantly changing the commandments and slogans of Animalism, the pigs are able to maintain their control over the other animals, to keep them in line and prevent any dissent or rebellion. In 1984, language is similarly used as a tool of control, but on a much larger scale. The Party, led by Big Brother, seeks to control every aspect of its citizens' lives, including their thoughts and beliefs. The Party's use of Newspeak, a language designed to limit freedom of thought, is a clear example of how language can be used to manipulate and control people. By restricting the vocabulary and concepts available to the citizens, the Party is able to limit their ability to think critically and question the Party's authority.
