Love can be addictive, leading to withdrawal symptoms when absent from "summary" of Anatomy of Love by Helen E. Fisher

Love can be addictive, just like drugs or alcohol can be. When we are in love, our brain releases chemicals such as dopamine and norepinephrine that make us feel euphoric and excited. These chemicals are the same ones that are released when a person takes drugs like cocaine. So, it is no wonder that we can become addicted to love. When we are separated from the person we love, our brain goes through withdrawal. Just like a drug addict experiences physical and emotional symptoms when they are deprived of their drug of choice, we can experience similar symptoms when we are deprived of love. We may feel anxious, irritable, and depressed. We may have trouble sleeping and eating. Our thoughts may constantly be consumed by the person we love, and we may feel a deep longing to be with them again. This is because love activates the brain's reward system, the same system that is activated by addictive substances. When we are in love, our brain craves the feelings of pleasure and happiness that come with being with the person we love. When we are separated from them, our brain goes into overdrive, trying to find ways to get that fix of pleasure again. In a way, love can be seen as a form of addiction. We become dependent on the person we love to make us happy and to feel whole. When that person is not around, we may go through withdrawal, experiencing physical and emotional pain that can be difficult to bear. Understanding that love can be addictive can help us navigate our relationships more effectively. It can help us recognize when our feelings for someone may be unhealthy or when we may be too dependent on them for our own happiness. By acknowledging the addictive nature of love, we can take steps to ensure that we have a healthy relationship with both ourselves and our partners.
