Uncertainty is a fundamental aspect of human knowledge from "summary" of An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding by David Hume

Human understanding is limited by the nature of our faculties, which are inherently fallible and imperfect. We can never attain absolute certainty in our knowledge, as our perceptions and reasoning are subject to error and uncertainty. This uncertainty is not a deficiency of our faculties but rather a fundamental aspect of human knowledge. Our knowledge is based on experience, which is inherently limited and subjective. We can never be certain that our perceptions accurately reflect the external world, as they are filtered through the lens of our senses and interpretation. Our reasoning is also prone to error, as our understanding is shaped by our biases, beliefs, and limitations. Despite these limitations, we rely on our senses and reasoning to navigate the world and make decisions. We form beliefs and judgments based on the information available to us, even though this information is inherently uncertain. We accept this uncertainty as a necessary part of human knowledge, as we cannot escape the limitations of our faculties. In the face of uncertainty, we must approach knowledge with humility and skepticism. We should be open to questioning our beliefs and revising our judgments in light of new evidence. We should recognize the limits of our understanding and be willing to acknowledge the uncertainty that underlies our knowledge.
  1. Uncertainty is not a barrier to knowledge but rather a defining feature of it. By embracing uncertainty, we can better appreciate the complexity and depth of human understanding. We must accept the limits of our knowledge and approach the world with an attitude of curiosity and openness.
