In the summer of 1939, as the clouds of war gathered over Europe, a small group of Hungarian scientists who had fled Hitler's regime persuaded Albert Einstein to sign a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt. The letter warned that Nazi Germany might be developing an atomic bomb and urged the United States to do the same. Einstein was not part of the Manhattan Project, the U. S. effort to build an atomic bomb, but his letter helped spur Roosevelt to set it in motion.
