Reflective equilibrium is a method of moral reasoning that seeks a balance between our considered judgments and the principles that we use to justify those judgments. It is a process of deliberation that involves comparing our intuitive moral beliefs with the theoretical principles that underlie those beliefs, in order to achieve a coherent and consistent set of moral values. The idea behind reflective equilibrium is that our moral beliefs and principles should be mutually reinforcing and consistent with one another. This means that we should be able to articulate and defend our moral intuitions in terms of more general principles, and vice versa.
