Universe began with Big Bang from "summary" of A Short History of Nearly Everything: Special Illustrated Edition by Bill Bryson

The notion that everything began with a Big Bang is both extraordinary and surprisingly straightforward. Imagine - in the beginning, all the matter and energy that now populate the universe originated from a single point of infinite density. It is difficult to conceive of such a concept, but this is the prevailing theory that scientists have arrived at after years of observation and research. According to this theory, the universe - in all its vastness and complexity - began as a singularity, a point of unimaginable density and temperature. From this singularity, about 13.8 billion years ago, the universe began to expand rapidly, in an event we now refer to as the Big Bang. This expansion continues to this day, shaping the universe as we know it. In the first few moments after the Big Bang, the universe was a seething, super-hot soup of particles and radiation. As it expanded and cooled, these particles began to coalesce into the first atoms - mostly hydrogen and helium. Over time, gravity began to pull these atoms together, forming the first stars and galaxies. The concept of the Big Bang has been supported by a wealth of evidence, from the observed expansion of the universe to the cosmic microwave background radiation that permeates all of space. Scientists have used these pieces of evidence to construct a comprehensive theory of the universe's origins and evolution. While the idea of the Big Bang may seem incomprehensible, it is a testament to the power of human ingenuity and curiosity. By piecing together the clues left behind by the universe itself, scientists have been able to unravel the mystery of our cosmic origins, painting a picture of a universe that began with a bang - and has been expanding ever since.
