Humans have impacted environment from "summary" of A Short History of Nearly Everything: Special Illustrated Edition by Bill Bryson

It is difficult to overstate the extent to which humans have impacted the environment. Over the course of our relatively brief time on Earth, we have managed to alter the planet in ways that no other species has even come close to achieving. From the moment we first began to fashion tools and harness fire, we have been transforming the natural world to suit our needs. At first, our impact was relatively minor. But as our numbers grew and our technology advanced, our ability to shape the environment around us grew exponentially. We cleared forests, drained wetlands, dammed rivers, and dug mines. We burned fossil fuels and released vast quantities of pollutants into the atmosphere. We hunted animals to extinction and introduced invasive species to new habitats. The consequences of our actions have been profound. Climate change, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, pollution – these are just a few of the ways in which we have altered the Earth's natural systems. And the effects of our actions are not limited to the environment itself. They have also had significant impacts on human societies, economies, and health. But perhaps the most remarkable thing about our impact on the environment is that we are only now beginning to fully understand it. For most of our history, we have been largely unaware of the long-term consequences of our actions. It is only in recent decades that we have begun to recognize the extent of the damage we have done – and to take steps to address it. The challenge now is to find ways to live sustainably on this planet – to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It is a daunting task, but one that is essential if we are to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for ourselves and for the countless other species with which we share this remarkable planet.
